Transcription Factors in the Nervous System: Development, Brain Function, and Diseases by Gerald Thi

Publisher: Wiley-VCH; 1 edition (March 6, 2006) | ISBN: 3527312854 | Pages: 505 | PDF | 6.69 MB

This first book to cover neural development, neuronal survival and function on the genetic level outlines promising approaches for novel therapeutic strategies in fighting neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer s disease. Focusing on transcription factors, the text is clearly divided into three sections devoted to transcriptional control of neural development, brain function and transcriptional dysregulation induced neurological diseases. With a chapter written by Nobel laureate Eric Kandel, this is essential reading for neurobiologists, geneticists, biochemists, cell biologists, neurochemists and molecular biologists.

Brain Tumors (Contemporary Cancer Research) by Francis Ali-Osman

Publisher: Humana Press; 1 edition (October 1, 2003) | ISBN: 1588290425 | Pages: 400 | PDF | 12.01 MB

This multiauthored textbook compiles recent scientific advances in brain-tumor biology. In the past 10 to 15 years, there has been an explosion of information regarding the genesis and pathological classification of and new treatments for brain tumors. The main focus of this book is the gliomas, but it also deals with other primary brain tumors, such as meningiomas, as well as brain metastases. The editor has called on a notable group of authors who are widely recognized as experts and investigators of the fundamental abnormalities that characterize malignant brain tumors. The book has three sections. The first focuses on epidemiology, biology, genetics, and pathology; the second describes mechanisms and genetic pathways involved in oncogenesis; and the final section reviews new therapeutics. There is considerable overlap of information, particularly between the first two sections, in describing the critical pathways that are disrupted in glioma. For example, the molecular characteristics that distinguish a primary from a secondary glioblastoma are discussed many times.

Lifespan Development and the Brain: The Perspective of Biocultural Co-Constructivism by Paul B. Balt

Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 1 edition (June 19, 2006) | ISBN: 0521844940 | Pages: 444 | PDF | 13.63 MB

This book focuses on the developmental analysis of brain-culture-environment dynamics and argues that this dynamic is interactive and reciprocal; brain and culture co-determine each other. As a whole, this book refutes any unidirectional conception of the brain-culture dynamic, as each is influenced by and modifies the other. To capture the ubiquitous reach and significance of the mutually dependent and co-productive brain-culture system, the metaphor of biocultural co-constructivism is invoked. Distinguished researchers from cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and developmental psychology review the evidence in their respective fields. A special focus of the book is its coverage of the entire human lifespan.

The Asymmetrical Brain (Bradford Books) by Kenneth Hugdahl

Publisher: The MIT Press; illustrated edition (December 13, 2002) | ISBN: 0262083094 | Pages: 732 | PDF | 14.46 MB

The folk belief that the left brain hemisphere is dominant for language and the right for visuospatial functions is incomplete and even misleading. Research shows that asymmetries exist at all levels of the nervous system and apply to emotional as well as to higher cognitive processes. Going beyond their previous book, Brain Asymmetry, this book reflects the most recent thinking on functional asymmetries and their structural correlates in brain anatomy. It emphasizes research using new neuroimaging and neurostimulation techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI and fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). It also considers clinical applications of asymmetry research. The book contains seven sections: animal models and basic functions, neuroimaging and brain stimulation studies, visual laterality, auditory laterality, emotional laterality, neurological disorders, and psychiatric disorders.

Memory and Brain Dynamics: Oscillations Integrating Attention, Perception, Learning, and Memory by E

Publisher: CRC Press; 1 edition (May 14, 2004) | ISBN: 0415308364 | Pages: 256 | PDF | 16.54 MB

Memory itself is inseparable from all other brain functions and involves distributed dynamic neural processes. This book bridges the disciplines of neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and EEG-brain dynamics to understand how the brain represents mental events that are interwoven with memory. The text presents a new study-framework that links oscillatory brain activity with the concept of dynamic memory, leading to dynamic-APLR alliance and all brain functions. The latest volume in the Conceptual Advances in Brain Research series, Memory and Brain Dynamics is an invaluable reference for all postgraduate students, researchers and professionals in the field of neuroscience.

Slow Electrical Processes in the Brain, Volume 7 (Progress in Brain Research) by N. A. Aladjalova

Publisher: Elsevier Science (January 15, 1964) | ISBN: 0444400079 | Pages: 243 | PDF | 15.94 MB

Many phenomena in animal nerve tissue are accompanied by electrical processes. These processes are largely due to mechanisms of nervous activity. They provide special opportunities for studying those aspects of nervous activity which generally do not lend themselves to other research techniques. Conversion of the energy of cell metabolism to a specific neuronal function is responsible for molecular and ionic changes, which are associated with the appearance of electrical potentials and changes in electrical constants of the tissue - its electroconducting and dielectric properties. The electrical potentials that arise in the brain have a varied origin. These include the brief impulses lasting 0.2-3 msec that follow excitation of the neuron and the slower potentials lasting 10-20msec that reflect the processes of local excitation in the cell body and in its dendritic processes. Slow potential oscillations with periods ranging from 50-500 msec are shown in the electrocorticogram (ECoG).

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors: A Revised and Updated Directory f

Publisher: Icon Health Publications (September 2002) | ISBN: 0597830029 | Pages: 152 | PDF | 17.69 MB

his book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to brain and spinal cord tumors (also Astrocytoma; Brain tumor - primary; Brain tumors; Cancer brain tumor ; Ependymoma; Glioblastoma multiforme), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research.
