In London, Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. John Watson captures the follower of black magic and serial killer Lord Blackwood that has already killed five women when he is near to kill his sixth victim. Blackwood is sentenced to be strung up and Dr. Watson attests his death. However, Blackwood mysteriously returns from the afterlife and Inspector Lestrade summons Sherlock Holmes to help the Scotland Yard in the investigation. Meanwhile Dr. Watson intends to get married of the gorgeous Mary Morstan while Sherlock is visited by his former lover Irene Adler that has a secret agenda.

Taiwanese horror doesn’t have much brand identity.  In a way that makes it one of the more interesting Asian nations getting in on the International horror scene.  Korea, Japan and (most recently) Thailand all have emerged with their own symbolic staples both in front of and behind the camera, but Taiwan’s contributions don’t seem to have any unique cultural signifiers to them.  Sure, that’s just dumb Yankee outside talker, I’m sure there’s plenty for the Taiwanese to call their own that I’ll never be aware, but this filtered reflection of other nation’s horror is what interests me more than anything.

Take, for example, INVITATION ONLY, the latest ‘big’ horror movie to come out of Taiwan.  There are no pale women with long-black hair hiding in the shadows, no crazy ghosts waiting in the wings and no unbreakable family bonds.  INVITATION ONLY is about five strangers who are lured to a warehouse under the assumption they’re going to a VIP only party.  It’s a party alright, but our five are only there to be inevitably tortured for the amusement of rich people.  That’s right, it’s a HOSTEL rip off – there’s even a scene in which a cart full of body parts is used in an escape attempt – but director Kevin Ko is good at pulling off the heist.

When an evil corporation threatens to unleash the black plague, Evan Grail, is recruited by his grandfather, Max, into the order of the Black Knights a secret band of warriors who have been called upon in the past to fight evil and injustice. Evan learns that his parents were murdered by the same twisted villain, Simon Darth, who threatens to unleash the plague. Evan wears the uniform of the Black Knights and must fight Simons evil army to save the day.

After Bella recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life, she looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward and his family. However, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bellas blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens, who decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington for Bella and Edwards sake. Initially heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black. Danger in different forms awaits.

Director Keralino Sandorovich, best known for his Monty Pythoninspired wacky comedies, brings us a black comedy in the Japanese/British style about an unsuccessful Gravure tarento (pinup) model named Ayame (the pretty Riko Narumi in her first starring role) who unwittingly steals a magazine from a convenience store because she was shocked that her photo in it was printed upside down and a bit panicky. She gets caught and as a sentence, must perform community duties by becoming police chief for a day. During her tenure, a robbery occurs at a convenience store and instead of letting the real police chief deal with the robbery, she decides to take the matter into her own hands. While the story tosses reality out the door, the stars and the unusual supporting casts of characters keeps this allout comedy interesting.
